<div>The train to Wasington DC left at the crack of dawn. Penn Station in the early hours of the day&nbsp;is crowded with homeless people, which made me think about Mitt Romney's remark that he is&nbsp;"not concerned about the very poor [because] we have a safety net... ."&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>At Union Station in DC,&nbsp;I finally find a taxi driver who'd accept credit cards but insists on an extra $5 charge. On the way to the White House, I noticed an imposing building of the otherwise very much virtual <a href="http://www.phoenix.edu/">University of Phoenix</a>. What a coincidence. &nbsp;</div>

<div>Next, I find myself entering the Eisenhower Executive Building on the&nbsp;The White House grounds, which does not look unlike my former gymnasium in East Berlin; a majestic building with tall weighty oak doors and long white-tiled aisles.&nbsp;</div>

<div>At the security screening I am handing over my ID for inspection and receive a large pink badge that identifies me as a foreign national and that signals that&nbsp;I have to be&nbsp;accompanied&nbsp;by an&nbsp;escort&nbsp;at&nbsp;all&nbsp;times.&nbsp;Gayle Smith, Special Assistant to the President &amp; Senior Director of the National Security Council, later asked forgiveness stating that if she'd visit my/our country she'd be willing to wear a badge also. Fair enough. <br /><br />Soon after entering the South Court Auditorium where the Development event took place, wireless Internet access became unavailable and cellphone reception cut off, preventing visitors from live blogging.&nbsp;</div>

<div><br />The event started with presentations by government officials, followed by seminar-style breakout sessions, led by White House advisors who consulted invited guests on a set of topics related to global development.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Holdren">John Holdren</a>, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy welcomes the more than one hundred people in attendance.&nbsp;He starts off by celebrating the second <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/02/07/president-obama-hosts-white-house-science-fair">White House Science Fair</a>&nbsp;that included more than 180 students.&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>Director Holdren welcomed <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/02/06/background-exhibits-students-and-competitions-white-house-science-fair">students from a middle school in Indiana</a> who, promoted by the news about the earthquake in Haiti, had designed a lightweight, portable disaster relief shelter, complete with a water purification system and a renewable energy source to power an LED light for displaced&nbsp;persons.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>Dr. Holdren invites <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bLkHFdF-6o">Marian Bechtel</a>, an eloquent and assertive 17-year old&nbsp;Hempfield High School student from Lancaster,&nbsp;Pennsylvania to talk about the&nbsp;Mine Detecting Device that she devised. "Marian&rsquo;s design could lead to a simple, cheap, and reliable humanitarian demining tool," the White House blog states. It was definitely inspiring to experience these young innovators who have not seen the boundaries of impossibility.&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>Holdren identified a few global challenges- from global malnutrition and the fact&nbsp;the 920 million people go to bed hungry every night to the 1.9 million people who die because of indoor air pollution every year.&nbsp;How does government respond to these and other global challenges? <a href="https://www.facebook.com/USAID.News?ref=mf">USAID</a>&nbsp;aims to grant start-up support for businesses that can offer inexpensive, safe cooking stoves to economic developing countries, for example (<a href="http://www.agrecol.de/files/u8/KEES%20Carbon%20Markets%20for%20Improved%20Cooking%20Stoves%20AGRECOL%20Meeting%202011.pdf">pdf</a>).&nbsp;Dr. Holdren pointed out that when&nbsp;President Obama&nbsp;took office,&nbsp;he&nbsp;called for an&nbsp;all-hands-on-deck approach&nbsp;to science, technology, math, and engineering. Holdren and others accenctuated a&nbsp;shift of the government's position toward development from&nbsp;empathy&nbsp;to&nbsp;opportunity,&nbsp;a move from philanthropy-based development to the search for entrepreneurial solutions to global challenges.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Mobile money was one of the topics of the event. The prominence of the mobile money discussion goes back to the fact that 5.3 billion people have a mobile phone and by 2016 the number of people with a mobile phone subscription in Africa is estimated to grow to 1 billion. If you are not familiar with the concept of mobile money, just read up on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-Pesa">M-Pesa</a>, a system for everything from&nbsp;sending remittances home across the country and making payments. M-Pesa has over 6 million customers.&nbsp;</div>

<div><br />Dr. Holdren provided an example of the use of mobile money in Afghanistan where police is now paid via cell phone receiving 30% higher salaries not because of a splendid governmental incentive program but because middlemen (and their demand for bribes) are eliminated from the process.&nbsp;</div>

<div><a href="http://blog.visa.com/2010/10/15/update-from-bill-gajda-mobile-and-visa&rsquo;s-strategy/"><br />Bill Gajda</a>, the head of Global Mobile Products of Visa talked about &ldquo;banking&nbsp;the un-banked and underbanked," starting with the&nbsp;two billion people who have a cell phone but no bank account.&nbsp;With that goal in mind, Visa <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2011/06/09/visa-acquires-fundamo-to-offer-mobile-money-to-the-unbanked/">acquired</a> <a href="http://www.fundamo.com/">Fundamo</a>, he said.&nbsp;Visa's objective is to be able to introduce virtual visa accounts into cash-based societies in order to draw large numbers of people into the global banking system. If you follow this vision, the&nbsp;cell phone may soon become your mobile wallet.&nbsp;Gajda described the process as one&nbsp;where mobile phone operators and banks have to move closer together. The third-largest office of Visa is now located in Cape Town, South Africa.&nbsp;</div>

<div><br />The CEO of <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/">Kickstarter</a> talked about the work of his crowdfunding company and posed that "what poor people really need is money." Really.</div>

<div>In the brief Q &amp; A session, <a href="http://www.uspto.gov/about/bios/kapposbio.jsp">David Kappos</a>, Under-Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, was asked if there is any consideration of removing patents from software to help economically developing countries. Kappos responded by explaining that software is simply a language like French or English. In and of itself software is not the issue. It's about finding inventions that are just so exceptional that they deserve to be patented. Minor improvements in software should not be patented.&nbsp;</div>

<div><br />Kappos looked back on the understanding of intellectual property and patents, which have been fought about in terms of protection. Instead,&nbsp;Mr. Kappos called for an opportunity rather than threat-based narrative. The&nbsp;United States intellectual property system today&nbsp;also considers intellectual property as a humanitarian issue. Concretely, this means setting up programs that lead to an&nbsp;expedited technology transfer of federally-funded inventions;&nbsp;a program to reward inventors who use their patented technologies to address humanitarian needs,&nbsp;and "initiatives to leverage advances in Internet and communications technologies to provide new development tool." (<a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/02/08/harnessing-science-technology-innovation-promote-global-development">source</a>)&nbsp;The world's problems must be solved through innovation, he said. And investing in innovation always comes with the danger of investing in failure.&nbsp;It took 15 years for the cell phone to be adopted on a mass scale and&nbsp;<a href="http://Amazon.com/">Amazon.com</a>, founded in 1994, turned its first mild profit in 2001.&nbsp;</div>

<div><br />A Cambodian woman with tears in her eyes discussed being kidnapped at the age of 10 and then being held for 10 years in a brothel before she escaped and founded an initiative against Sex Trafficking. Every year over 1.2 million children and young people are trafficked globally. She talked about her work with NYT columnist Nick Kristoff and his book (and documentary) <a href="http://www.halftheskymovement.org/">Half the Sky</a>&nbsp;that also tells her story. I was happy to learn that one of my students at The New School,&nbsp;Fan David,&nbsp;collaborated with <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/opinion/editorialsandoped/oped/columnists/nicholasdkristof/index.html">Kristoff</a>&nbsp;on the documentary.&nbsp;</div>

<div><a href="http://explore.georgetown.edu/people/jph35/?PageTemplateID=179">James Habyarimana</a>,&nbsp;a&nbsp;Georgetown professor born in Uganda, described his project focusing on the reduction of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Traffic_related_deaths_-_Road_fatalities_per_capita.svg">car accidents in Africa</a>.&nbsp;In most of Africa, bad street conditions,&nbsp;horrific driving habits,&nbsp;and deficient cars lead to countless road fatalities every year.&nbsp;Habyarimana's&nbsp;project is easy to explain. Stickers placed in cars ask co-drivers to tell the driver when they don't feel safe if they drive too fast. Soclally sanctioned back seat driving? In one study in Kenya, Habyarimana&nbsp;showed how more than a third of car deaths were avoided because of these stickers.</div>

<div>For me, the most fascinating part of the day was the seminar-style breakout session in a smaller room on the third floor. Walking by the open doors of White House counsels and staff, it was somehow unexpected to find literally doznes of campaifn photos in each office. Our session discussed the ways in which we can "harness the energy, idealism, and expertise of university students and faculty to generate, implement, and evaluate new solutions to critical development challenges." <div>I especially enjoyed the jovial and insightful <a href="http://www.hks.harvard.edu/about/faculty-staff-directory/calestous-juma">Calestous Juma</a>, Professor of the Practice of International Development at the Kennedy School of Government- who also had to wear the pink badge identifying him as a foreign national (<a href=" https://twitter.com/#!/Calestous">@calestous</a>). Juma portrayed universities as agents of community building.&nbsp;The dynamic and sharp-witted Phillip Auerswald (<a href="https://twitter.com/#!/auerswald">@auerswald</a>), a senior fellow at&nbsp;the <a href="http://www.kauffman.org/">Kauffman Foundation</a>&nbsp;(<a href="https://twitter.com/kauffmanfdn">@kauffmanfdn</a>). Auerswald is the author of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Coming-Prosperity-Entrepreneurs-Transforming-Economy/dp/0199795177">The Coming Prosperity</a>.&nbsp;Auerswald summed up the situation of Higher Learning today: Higher Education is in the situation of the newspaper industry in 1995 and the real estate industry in 2005. He asked how we can meet the opportunities of the 21st century and that was, of course, also central to <a href="http://mobilityshifts.org">MobilityShifts</a>&nbsp;where we asked how learners can escape a situation where the cost of education is rising and students seeking a formal degree are increasingly caught in a "debt trap." &nbsp;</div>

<div>Now, how to respond to this assessment is a different question. My own emphasis is on do-it-together models of learning as they emerged largely in Europe but also the United States. Many MobilityShifts (..) discussions focused on that topic. A <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/02/how-one-kitchen-table-in-brooklyn-became-a-school-for-coders/252809/">recent article in The Atlantic</a>, shows "How One Kitchen Table in Brooklyn Became a School for Coders." &nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>The breakout discussion centered around the question how universities can help to engage youth with global development. I asked how models of participatory learning can be applied in a developing context.&nbsp;<a href="http://mobilityshifts.org">MobilityShifts</a>&nbsp;explored the changing locales for learning, from libraries, after school programs, and museums to abandoned barbershops. This discussion is definitely relevant also to developing countries.&nbsp;The <a href="https://www.ai-class.com/">free online Artificial Intelligence course&nbsp;</a>offered by Stanford University came up several times during the day. The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=H9ngd6zCeUc">course</a> enrolled over 100,000 students.&nbsp;</div>

<div>In conversations, I was especilaly curious how we can move from a narrow focus on disciplinary thinking to a problem-focused, cross-disciplinary perspective. How can we bring Do-It-Together learning to developing countries? What are new pedagogical approaches for real-time mobile learning that&nbsp;make full use of the potential of mobile phones, iPods, laptops, PDAs, smart&nbsp;phones, Tablet PCs, and netbooks in informal contexts?</div>

<div>Lots of questions that need further discussion. I was amazed by the passion, energy, and thoughtfulness of the members of the administration whom I met. It was auspicious to see how the Obama administration is reaching out to academia. At the same I was definitely not persuaded by all presentations. Should <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505245_162-57374936/citibank-overcharged-some-customers-using-ipad-app/">big American banks</a>&nbsp;really be the ones to dominate the last edges of emerging (mobile) markets and all its "underbanked"?</div>
<div>Should the overdeveloped world simply transfer their instructional models to the developing world?&nbsp;</div>
<div>Is innovation really the answer to all global challenges?&nbsp;</div>
</div>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><br />After the event I had some time left and so I walked back to the train station. Half way, I came across a momument that read "To the more than one hundred million victims of communism and to those who love liberty." Though I lived for some twenty years under socialism (I don't think any country of the Eastern block ever declared "communism"), my life was not a fatality. To liberty.</p>

Seven hundred messages on the <a href="http://digitallabor.org/discussion/">conference mailing list</a>, 400 new subscribers to this forum (the <a href="http://digitallabor.org/discussion">iDC</a>), <a href="http://is.gd/53JVJ">hundreds of tweets</a>,&nbsp; </span><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://vimeo.com/ipf2009/videos/sort:oldest">52 video interviews</a>, 1200 conference registrations, and 1000 views of the live stream</span><span style="font-size: 110%;"> show that participants engaged with <a href="http://digitallabor.org/">The Internet as Playground and Factory</a> conference intensely and on various levels.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Frequent reference points in the animated conversations included practices like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_farming">gold farming</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod_%28computer_gaming%29">game modding</a>, blogging, &ldquo;turking&rdquo; on <a href="https://www.mturk.com/mturk/welcome">Amazon.com's Mechanical Turk</a>, gaming in World of Warcraft, outsourcing through LiveOps.com, collaborating on Wikipedia articles, reputation scamming through SubvertandProfit.com and sweating in "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA">captcha</a> sweatshops." Theoretical cues were repeatedly given to Paolo Virno, Harry Braverman, Hannah Arendt, Dallas Smythe, Jean Baudrillard, Bernhard Stiegler, Maurizio Lazzarato, Johan Huizinga, and <a href="http://vimeo.com/6882379">Tiziana Terranova</a>. <br /><br /><br /><span class="full-image-block ssNonEditable"><a href="http://vimeo.com/6882379"><img src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/post-images/terranova.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1261361997198" alt="" /></a><span class="thumbnail-caption" style="width: 498px;">Tiziana Terranova (prelude to The Internet as Playground and Factory) </span></span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">A few conference participants turned very many pages on the <a href="https://lists.thing.net/pipermail/idc/2009-June/thread.html">iDC mailing list</a> (and on Facebook and on <a href="http://friendfeed.com/search?q=ipf09">Twitter</a> and on Seesmic) while others silently participated and then spoke up at the conference. I am planning to go back and re-read all the list messages that did not get a response.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Still in the middle of post-production, it is not a simple task to reflect on this relatively large conference. There is always the inevitability of omissions, and the risk of oversimplifications, or misunderstandings but I am writing this because I was probably the only person who attended nearly all sessions at least in part, which was my mission because I convened the conference.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Shifts in labor markets have drawn attention to places where labor does not look like labor at all. The Internet has created new markets that can be accessed from anywhere with a net connection. While managerial royalty like Don Tapscott celebrated the business potential of &ldquo;crowdsourcing&rdquo; in books like &ldquo;Wikinomics,&rdquo; scholars such as <a href="http://vimeo.com/6880896">Andrew Ross</a> see digital labor as a non-surprising continuation of exploitative capitalist modes of operation. At the prelude to the conference <a href="http://is.gd/5knJ0">Ross stated</a> that "those who see the digital realm as a technology of de-skilling, outsourcing and work degradation are far outnumbered by those who see it as a medium of reskilling, innovation, and common value creation." Interactive input is just another transfer of work from more regulated kinds of labor markets, <a href="http://vimeo.com/6881391">Ross</a> stated. There is a great deal of overlap between intensified forms of expropriation of digital labor and traditional economies of unpaid work, especially in the home.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Several speakers claimed that we are all falling victim to a technocratic fetishization of the Internet that takes away from a full acknowledgment of the "real" places of exploitation: the heavily populated slums in what some participants called the &ldquo;global south.&rdquo; Are the discussed processes of monetization and coercion of "free" relations of exchange on the Social Web, as discussed at the conference, in fact a luxury problem in the overdeveloped world alone? The fact that cell phones are now widely used all throughout economical developing countries like Brazil, Russia, India, and China should lead to a re-evaluation of the worldwide participation gap.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><span class="full-image-block ssNonEditable"><img src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/post-images/gleaner1.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1261333345499" alt="" /></span><br /></span><span style="font-size: 110%;">At this conference the term <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/trebor/mark-andrejevic-as-part-of-the-internet-as-playground-and-factory">exploitation</a> did not find many friends as a suitable descriptor for what is happening online. This language is not helpful in opening up, especially young people to considerations about the ways in which they are being had. Right now,&nbsp; net users are taking advantage of </span><span style="font-size: 110%;">large commercial platforms to </span><span style="font-size: 110%;">market themselves and they feel little or no sense of victimhood or lack of payment.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">In the session &ldquo;<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WjorEAIExs">Ideology and the Erotics of Playbor,</a>&rdquo; <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/jonathan_beller">Jonathan Beller</a> correctly stated that the word "digital" does not sum up our entire condition. At the same time, however, the questions created by new expressions of labor markets in the financial-crisis world are increasingly urgent. There is a participatory turn in online sociality; the scale of participation is unprecedented. It is true that it is only a small segment of people with Internet access contributes material to the Web but this &ldquo;small segment&rdquo; of you-sers posted more than 150,000 videos a day to YouTube in 2008. Questions of expropriation of net users have a great deal of urgency given that the data of 350 million people are locked up under the rule of a single private entity like Facebook.&nbsp;</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">We decide with one click what&rsquo;s &ldquo;hot&rdquo; and what is not, we &ldquo;follow,&rdquo; or like, we save, refer, and bookmark. Why do we upload our boredom or perform our addictions online?&nbsp; I quoted Tim O'Reilly who stated that &ldquo;...they are participating without thinking that they participate. That&rsquo;s where the power comes.&rdquo; (Scholz, <a href="http://is.gd/5jQm2">http://is.gd/5jQm2</a>) There are manifold reasons for social participation online but fun is one of them.<br /><br /><strong>May the fun be with you<br /></strong><br />Fun was indeed a recurring -and even recursive- topic at IPF: Martin Roberts and Chris Kelty explored Fun in their presentations. Taking as a starting-point the ubiquity of the term Fun in contemporary discourses on productivity,<a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/martin_roberts"> Martin Roberts</a> related this to the eroding distinction between work and play. Considering it as a dominant value of postmodern society (comparable to terms such as "cool" or "organic"), he remained suspicious of it as an ideology, asking whose interests our Fun ultimately serves. Tracing the history of Fun to Coney Island, he suggested that critiques of labor by Adorno and others remain pertinent in a digital workplace organized around designing or even playing video games. Invoking the Sex Pistols' ritual destruction of Fun in their notorious final performance, Roberts considered whether escape from the postmodern fun house is even possible when anti-Fun has become just another kind of Fun. (Roberts, <a href="http://is.gd/5kg4f">http://is.gd/5kg4f)</a> How can we unlearn the short-lived pleasures of social media convenience?</span></p>

<h3>It&rsquo;s fun, right?</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/christopher_m_kelty">Chris Kelty </a>continued Martin Robert&rsquo;s line of inquiry. <a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/22394057/No-Fun-Slides">Kelty</a> started by outlining how crucial fun is to get people involved in working with computers and software. There is an endless stream of books with fun in the title. &ldquo;Programming is fun.&rdquo; &ldquo;Computer literacy is fun.&rdquo; The argument of many of these books is that your new paid job with computers is more fun than your old job delivering pizza, for example. Few books would be called &ldquo;The serious labor of software programming.&rdquo; Fun has often dominated the discussion about how to activate people and much research funding has been funneled into social psychology research for that reason. Some of this mentality is a hold-over from William Whyte&rsquo;s<strong> &ldquo;</strong>Organization Man&rdquo; (1956) and Ted Nelson&rsquo;s &ldquo;Computer Lib&rdquo; (1974). Fun is also used as category to explain why people contribute to free software. Linus Torvald&rsquo;s autobiography is titled &ldquo;Just for Fun.&rdquo; It&rsquo;s fun to stay up all night and see if you can get Linux to run on your machine. People seem to like fun better than not-fun. Even if they have to work to have fun, they&rsquo;ll do it to avoid not-fun work or no work at all,&rdquo; Kelty said. With regard to free software, it is especially important to understand why people are working without having been paid to do so. Why do hacker-types produce high quality software and then give it away for free? That still surprises some skeptics. Why do people work? Individuals do Free Software work for a plurality of reasons. Kelty emphasized that some of them do it for &ldquo;Free Software reasons&rdquo;: creating something for the public, making something freely available. Others want to &ldquo;stick it to the man,&rdquo; so to speak. Yet others do it for the fun, the joy, the pleasure, the fame, or the Boy Scout badge, or they are learning new skills and meet new people. With Free Software, people do not just argue about the way the world should be, they provide a proof of concept. Kelty introduced Hannah Arendt to think about the various ways in which we are dividing up the problem of labor, and that at least some at the conference seemed to think that Marx might be getting in the way of conceptual progress with this topic.<strong>&nbsp;</strong> <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://vimeo.com/8068570">Kelty</a> ends his IPF video interview with the plaintive request: "I may be the first against the wall when the revolution comes because I don't have any Marx in my presentation. So, please, don't kill me."&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">In my own presentation I discussed the <a href="http://www.gwap.com/gwap/gamesPreview/espgame/">ESP Game</a> by Luis Ahn, which was later bought by Google and branded as <a href="http://images.google.com/imagelabeler/">Google Image Labeler</a>. Ahn does not hold back: "</span><span style="font-size: 110%;">We encourage people to do the work by taking advantage of their desire to be entertained."&nbsp; </span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://vimeo.com/8203737">Jonathan Zittrain</a>, in what may have been the most entertaining, broadly accessible, and example-rich <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/trebor/ubicomp">presentation</a> at <a href="http://digitallabor.org/">IPF</a>, mostly probed cases of paid distributed labor. The often little known instances of distributed labor that he introduced included <a href="http://liveops.com/">LiveOps</a>, an outsourcing agency that enabled the Red Cross to recruit in-home freelance agents who processed 17,000 phone calls in the days after Hurricane Katrina had struck the Gulf Coast.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Other illustrations of &ldquo;out crowding,&rdquo; mostly in the area of innovation, included <a href="http://www.crowdflower.com/">Crowdflower</a>, <a href="http://www.solvate.com/">Solvate</a>, <a href="http://innocentive.com/">Innocentive</a>, and the work of the <a href="http://www.xprize.org/">Prize Foundation</a>. At <a href="https://www.mturk.com/mturk/welcome">Amazon.com&rsquo;s Mechanical Turk</a> even &ldquo;the dimmest bulb&rdquo; can make a few dollars, as he put it. Our individual web searches powered <a href="http://www.google.org/flutrends/us/">Google&rsquo;s Flu Trend</a> map. &ldquo;Crowdsourced&rdquo; stock market predictions are at the core of <a href="http://www.piqqem.com/">Piqqem.com</a>.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">But <a href="http://vimeo.com/8203737">Zittrain</a> also made some skeptical notes about specific services such as the well-known service Subvertandprofit.com, which allows its customers to secretly buy grassroots support. A reputable member of the Digg.com referral service, for example, may receive undercover-payments to &ldquo;dig&rdquo; (recommend) a site or product that he would otherwise not get excited about. In other words, given enough capital, your business can shine on the Social Web, even if it is mediocre. I&rsquo;d compare this to China's &ldquo;50 Cent Army,&rdquo; which consists of bloggers who get paid for pro-government comments or to Iran&rsquo;s 10,000 Basji paramilitary forces, which were ordered to start blogging. With Subvertandprofit.com, dollars can buy your business a good reputation on the Web.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/5336284.stm">BBC News</a> reports that &rdquo;captcha sweatshops&rdquo; are used in the developing world &ldquo;where spammers employ humans to decode 12 'captchas' a minute, all day long." A &ldquo;captcha&rdquo; is a test used in computing to ensure that the response is not generated by a computer.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">In a <a href="http://www.newsweek.com/id/225629">Newsweek article</a> entitled "Work the New Digital Sweatshops" he suggests to adopt labor standards to the Internet.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">One of the most egregious businesses of this sort, not mentioned in this talk, however, is Txteagle (<a href="http://txteagle.com/">http://txteagle.com/</a>). The mobile outsourcing business Txteagle is built on the fact that cell phones are increasingly pervasive in the economically developing world. The idea is to find simple tasks that people in those desperately poor geographic regions can execute on their phones in return for micro-payments.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/mark_andrejevic">Mark Andrejevic</a> <a href="http://vimeo.com/7697188">discussed</a> surveillance on the Social Web and in particular the world of sentiment analysis, with businesses aiming to predict the behavior of users. Companies like <a href="http://appirio.com">Appirio </a>are trying to piggyback on the social networks of their employees. &ldquo;Connect today&rsquo;s leading social network with your core business applications to engage a community and encourage word of mouth referrals.&rdquo;&nbsp;</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">"Social participation is the oil of the digital economy." (<a href="http://www.slideshare.net/trebor/institutionalized-free-labor-and-what-to-do-about-it">Scholz at IPF</a>) The economy becomes dependent on the free life fuel of billions of Internet users.&nbsp; Our online interactions grease the wheels of Wall Street, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/dominic_pettman">Dominic Pettman</a> argued, pointing to McLuhan that "our whole life is now becoming a service environment." And Pettman continues: &ldquo;We are not so much the workers but the oil in this metaphoric rendering of the social factory." Perhaps businesses should rethink their unhealthy reliance on this oil of the digital economy. Fans are giving their work away for free in exchange for being ignored by corporations who own the original content. Fully tracked Facebook status updates take the place of leisurely conversations in the coffee house. All the data collected get entered into larger databases of imperious, powerful intermediaries for the purpose of data tattooing, &hellip; corporate or government surveillance.</span></p>

This economic value is, in part, thoroughly speculative (think <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania">Tulip Mania</a> of 1637, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot-com_bubble">dot com crash</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lehman_Brothers">Lehmann Brothers</a>) and partially it indicates actual dollars in the bank. Play, for <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/brian_holmes">Brian Holmes</a>, becomes the lubricant to &rdquo;a perfected system of second-order cybernetic control over the consciousness of the [developed world's] middle-classes&hellip; a kind of world-creating and attention-channeling system [based on] contemporary social media, in its dominant corporate 2.0 forms"? (Holmes quoted by Kane, <a href="http://is.gd/5kkJn">http://is.gd/5kkJn</a>) <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/sean_cubitt">Sean Cubitt</a> asked in his insightful and charismatic <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/seancubitt/after-tolerance">talk </a>"When does the conflation of play and work begin to be intolerable&hellip;?" <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/pat_kane">Pat Kane</a>, on the other hand, <a href="http://vimeo.com/7698029">defended</a> the creative potential of play with colorful Scottish accent, culminating in him singing a song about the &ldquo;labors of love.&rdquo; Dominic Pettman is opting for a "a type of work which in fact sounds a lot like mindful, enigmatic, erotic play." (Pettman, <a href="http://is.gd/5oDvH">http://is.gd/5oDvH</a>) Historically, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/alexander_galloway">Alexander Galloway</a> says, play was the childlike, innocent opposite to monetization; that ineffable thing that is unsullied by the exigencies of modern industrial life.&nbsp; But with the turn of the 21st century that is starting to go away. According to <a href="http://vimeo.com/6527166">Galloway</a>, Adorno was the first one to say that the playground is the factory.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Not all Internet companies, however, actually make the millions of dollars that are reputed to turn over. Google bought YouTube for $1.6 billion but what it gets back is cultural power instead of money. At the same time it is a question of perspective when some consultants claim that net companies are not making money in general. The $150 million that Facebook made last year solely from advertising is not negligible.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Every click, second of attention and piece of data input is slated to be sold; life itself is put to work. The Social Web is free for us to use but the middleman is paid with our data. We are willing give up our privacy or at least our anonymity for convenience and &ldquo;free services.&rdquo; Which price do we put on the psychological and political implications of this loss of privacy? </span><br />&nbsp;<br /><span class="full-image-block ssNonEditable"><img src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/post-images/ken.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1261369634105" alt="" /><span class="thumbnail-caption" style="width: 498px;">Slide from McKenzie Wark's talk "Ideologies of Praxis"</span></span><br /><a href="http://www.slideshare.net/mckenziewark/ideologies-of-praxis"><br /></a><span style="font-size: 110%;">In his talk<a href="http://is.gd/5jLZV"> "Ideologies of Praxis</a>" <a href="http://vimeo.com/6428602">McKenzie Wark</a> brilliantly condensed the digital economy into a semiotic square. <p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://is.gd/5k2wS">Rob Mitchell claimed</a> that &ldquo;active patient participation in health projects [is] not unlike active participation in sites like Facebook. Yet emphasis on &lsquo;health&rsquo; focuses our attention on different aspects of these information dynamics." <br /><br /> <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/alex_rivera">Alex Rivera</a>'s sci-fi thriller <a href="http://sleepdealer.com">Sleep Dealer,</a> which kicked off the conference, described a near-future scenario where (American) corporations can extract all the work from the (Mexican) worker without actually having to deal with bothersome issues that come with physical presence. They get all the work without the worker. <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/lisa_nakamura">Lisa Nakamura</a> cited the film in her talk.&nbsp;</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><br /><a href="http://brianholmes.wordpress.com/2009/11/06/is-it-written-in-the-stars ">Holmes</a> also asserted that ICT and education in the third world are &ldquo;a factory for producing the subjects of communicative capitalism.&rdquo; (Holmes, <a href="http://is.gd/1vKmr">http://is.gd/1vKmr</a>) Jonathan Beller supported this line of argumentation by drawing on classic media critiques, from Enzensberger&rsquo;s &ldquo;Anyone who expects to be emancipated by technological hardware or by a system of hardware however structured, is the victim of an obscure belief in progress" (1970) to Baudrillard&rsquo;s "terrorism of the code" (1972). (<a href="http://vimeo.com/7449081">Beller</a>, <a href="http://is.gd/5iUSy">http://is.gd/5iUSy</a>) Holmes also suggested that focusing on the Internet may altogether distract us from the most important issues of our time.&nbsp;&nbsp; <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">In my presentation I suggested that there are no longer any unsullied outside spaces that escape the imperial Ferris Wheel of the corporate capture of value. Digital economies are always already hybrid. I suggested that feasible strategies of resistance have to arise within the belly of the beast. With help of the rhetoric of &ldquo;free speech&rdquo; commercial interests have colonized even the last corners of the Web and consequential political activism and commons-oriented practices now find ways to thrive on corporate, virtual &ldquo;real estate.&rdquo;&nbsp; <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Many conference speakers embraced critical perspectives about time spent on the Web. In my presentation I referred to Yochai Benkler who calculated that &ldquo;A billion people in advanced economies may have between two billion and six billion spare hours among them, every day.&rdquo; (Scholz, <a href="http://is.gd/5sK8d">http://is.gd/5sK8d</a>) Dominic Pettman suggested that we must learn to focus, and not be &ldquo;distracted by shrill solicitations from all 360 degrees (of which Twitter is only the most recent exacerbating example).&rdquo; (Pettman, <a href="http://is.gd/5nzeZ">http://is.gd/5nzeZ</a>) Eugene Lang undergraduate student L<a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/luis_vincent_nunez">uis Nunez</a> said that "being tied to your Blackberry isn&rsquo;t as cruel as, say, being chained to the floor of a manufacturing plant; nevertheless the condition of bondage is almost as absolute." (Nunez, <a href="http://is.gd/5kl7i">http://is.gd/5kl7i</a>)<br /><br /> The theme of time theft and addiction repeatedly emerged in conference discussions. <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/guest3a676d/jonathan-beller-digital-ideology-presentation">Jonathan Beller</a> quoted Dallas Smythe: &nbsp;"As the Chinese emphasized during the Cultural Revolution, if people are spending their time catering to their individual interests and sensitivities, they cannot be using the same time to overthrow capitalist interest and to build socialism.&rdquo;</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Time spent on Facebook, in other words, stops us from pursuing the expropriation of the expropriators.&nbsp; We cannot further the cause of the revolution because we are too busy checking news feeds. Would there really be an insurrection if millions of citizens had more time?</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/ulises_mejias">Ulises Mejias</a> evoked the sirens of monopsony, which is a concept from economics that refers to a market in which several sellers offer goods or services but there is only one buyer. If you want your video to be seen by many people, YouTube is your only chance.If you want your micro-blog message to be read widely, Twitter is your must-go destination. If you post your grandma&rsquo;s favorite recipe on one of these platforms, ads will appear. They abuse your gift to the commons by turning a profit from it. <a href="http://vimeo.com/8067164">Mejias</a> pushes us to un-think the logic of the network. Deviation from social norms, he suggest, is only possible in private, surveillance-free spacees, away from the network. In search for the outside of networks, Mejias proposed a turn to the paranodal, the spaces between the network nodes.<br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">In front of our very eyes, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/hector_postigo">Hector Postigo</a> permanently deleted his Facebook account. He showed the messages that the site spits back to deter users from the act. Lovable profile photos of Hector's friends with captions like "Jonah will you" appeared. "Casey will miss you." "Sebastiano will miss you." Numerous conference speakers signed on to this gesture of refusal and withdrawal.<br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span class="full-image-block ssNonEditable"><img src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/post-images/Picture%208.png?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1261196202298" alt="" /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">I am increasingly convinced that such gestures of refusal are based on significant degrees of privilege. It is a classic double bind. Many students depend on their web-presence and the wealth of their networked weak ties when they enter the job market. On the other hand, such buy-in merely greases the wheels of the corporate Social Web. Is it responsible to suggest refusal of or withdrawal from the Social Web to students (especially those without a trust fund) unless you are sure that the revolution is knocking on the door tomorrow?<br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><strong>Alternatives</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">While various speakers focused on theoretical analysis, others proposed hands-on alternatives, tangible suggestions that many of us could actually start to pursue today. Many speakers offered sharp analysis but were unspecific about proposals that could be implemented. The end of capitalism was a precondition for some scenarios. Notably, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/christian_fuchs">Christian Fuchs </a><a href="http://vimeo.com/7954268">demanded</a> a Communist Internet for a Communist society.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">The question of new opportunities for solidarities came up several times. How can we rethink unionization and class, and how can net-workers demand a stake in the wealth that they are creating? With hundreds of millions of people flocking to the Social Web like moths to the light, is not there an opportunity for a collective self-becoming? It is time for Internet users to self-organize. If class consciousness is a thorny and perhaps unrealistic proposal for the realities of the Internet, maybe demands for a political consciousness are not quite as far fetched. Jonathan Zittrain concluded his talk with the call "Click workers of the world, unite!" but he did not detail his proposal. <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><strong>Expropriation Literacy: Unlearning to Labor</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Suggesting new literacies for the future, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/howard_rheingold">Howard Rheingold</a> contributed the most participatory presentation at IPF. Digital natives are familiar with digital systems but they often lack essential competencies, he argued. Pointing to self-organized educational projects like <a href="http://schoolofeverything.com/">The School of Everything</a> and <a href="http://www.supercoolschool.com/">The Supercool School</a>, Rheingold questioned the future of brick and mortar institutions for higher learning. <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/alexander_halavais">Alexander Halavais</a> reported that his former employer, a research university, had posed a challenge to the faculty: think of your students as hamburgers and tell us how you can turn out more hamburgers with fewer resources. How would you like your student today?</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">But while <a href="http://vimeo.com/8284794">Rheingold and Halavais</a> did not idealize the mentioned educational alternatives; they did allude to problems, namely branding and accreditation. </span><span style="font-size: 110%;">More specifically, Rheingold suggested &ldquo;crap detection&rdquo; as one of the most vitally important literacies for today&rsquo;s students.&nbsp; How do you &ndash;as a student or teacher-- detect when you are being manipulated?&nbsp;&nbsp; What are the ethics of encountering others in mediated social milieus?<strong> </strong>In my own presentation I specifically argued for the term expropriation literacy.<br /><strong><br /> Disrupt, Fake, Jailbreak</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">IPF also asked to consider ways in which art and activism can reroute the locked-down technologies of transnational corporations and distribute digital labor according to more ethical terms. <a href="http://vimeo.com/7404991">Christiane Paul</a> was one of the most perceptive voices at the conference when it came to media art. <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/burak_arikan">Burak Arikan</a>&rsquo;s online project &ldquo;<a href="http://burak-arikan.com/meta-markets">Meta-markets</a>,&rdquo; for example, draws attention to &ldquo;user labor&rdquo; by offering a stock market for online assets. Your contributions to Flickr, Delicious, and Facebook are translated into stocks, which you can then trade with each other. At The Internet as Playground and Factory, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/ursula_endlicher">Ursula Endlicher</a>, in collaboration with Arikan set up a performance, which took the code that drives Facebook as starting point for the choreography of their <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/newschool/4101614029/in/set-72157622674520059/">performance.</a> Several performers reenacted user labor on this social networking service.&nbsp; &nbsp;</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">One lawyer got really confused by artist projects like <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/chris_barr">Chris Barr</a>&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.interruptions.org/">Bureau of Workplace Interruptions</a><strong> </strong>(<a href="http://www.interruptions.org">http://www.interruptions.org</a>). Barr offered workers a way out of their daily trot. Where else can you schedule a phone call by a fake corporate agent who reads you a poem while you are at work? <strong><br /></strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><strong><span class="full-image-float-right ssNonEditable"><img src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/post-images/kildall.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1261367063685" alt="" /><span class="thumbnail-caption" style="width: 498px;">Screen Capture from "No Matter" Project</span></span>&nbsp;</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><br />With their project "No Matter," <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/scott_kiildall_and_victoria_scott">Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott</a> examined how the "freelance labor market" operates in Second Life (SL). They asked residents in the virtual world to build 40 "imaginary objects." In SL, fashion items and pre-fabricated structures like buildings cost between $0.56 and $37.42. For a model of Icarus's Wings, for example, <a href="http://is.gd/5g3xl">Kildall and Scott </a>paid $5.59&nbsp;for 45 hours of work to a SL resident who was based in Slovenia. That translates into an hourly age of $0.12. Why would residents possibly perform such underpaid labor? Kildall and Scott argued that this work allowed residents to reinvent themselves. They could establish a new reputation online that was not impacted by their age, class or nationality (<a href="http://www.nomatter.org/">http://ww.nomatter.org</a>).<br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Through the lens of his &ldquo;Implementation,&rdquo; a novel published on stickers, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/nick_montfort">Nick Montfort </a>proposed the refusal of utility as a subversive strategy. In his <a href="http://vimeo.com/8204449">video interview</a> he stated that &ldquo;Linux is great but it is extremely useful. My own work is of very little if any utility.&rdquo; (<a href="http://nickm.com/implementation/">http://nickm.com/implementation/</a>)</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">&ldquo;We might be able to use today&rsquo;s networks as an axe for the frozen sea within us, a way of radicalizing ourselves along literary as well as political dimensions,&rdquo; Montfort said.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">In his <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/darrenwershler/uncreative-class-slides">presentation</a>, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/darren_wershler">Darren Wershler</a> reflected on the political economy of creativity, the way in which business gets interested in creativity while poetry moves toward uncreativity. Wershler took cues from the American poet Kenneth Goldsmith and his questioning of Richard Florida&rsquo;s discourse about creativity and business. What gets left out from mainstream narratives of creativity and what does a poetics of uncreativity have to say in order to form a critique of that? <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Where Wershler and Montfort brushed against common notions of creativity and utility, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/geoff_cox">Geoff Cox </a>tackled the glorification of the social by presenting a collection of &ldquo;anti-social projects&rdquo; that he co-curated for Arnolfini, a contemporary arts organization<strong> </strong>in Bristol (<a href="http://project.arnolfini.org.uk/antisocial">http://project.arnolfini.org.uk/antisocial</a>). <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">In line with such interventions that &ldquo;jail break&rdquo; social blockbuster services, I would also like to mention <a href="http://jacktoolin.net/my_space_for_your_life/index.html">Jack Toolin&rsquo;s &ldquo;My Space for Your Life.&rdquo;</a> Toolin states: &ldquo;The project consists of Facebook pages made for Iraqis killed during the Iraq invasion. These pages feature volunteers who have agreed to become the 'face' of these lost individuals, and they are circulated in Facebook through the act of 'friending.'&rdquo; <br /></span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">In an inspiring and clear <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/FrankPasq/pasquale-distributive-justice-online">presentation</a> </span><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/frank_pascale">Frank Pasquale</a> </span><span style="font-size: 110%;">questioned the justice of wealth distribution. Pasquale challenged us to think if it is just that companies like Facebook or Google reap the benefits from our online activities in such a centralized and non-transparent way. How much power do we as a society give to major sites on the Internet? Should not critically important digital public spheres be regulated in some way? Giving the example of<em> </em>Google&rsquo;s protected algorithms, Pasquale reminded us of the sharply defined asymmetries between users and intermediaries. What are the temptations of dominance, he asked. Should Google be able to tier access to Google Books? Imagine Harvard University, for example, which could get unlimited access to the full text of all scanned books for $10 million a year while other universities would only obtain a &ldquo;disabled version.&rdquo; Should Google be able to manually change rankings: uprank sites by business partners, down rank or eliminate sites that sue the company (or those that criticize Google executives)? Should Facebook be able to kick off its members without due process or prevent them from accessing their data? Pasquale quoted one blogger who wrote: &ldquo;Facebook is shutting down accounts of users who are exhibiting any behavior it finds remotely suspicious.&rdquo;</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Control is not merely taking place on the content level but also on the level of infrastructures, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/participants/laura_e_denardis">Laura DeNardis</a> argued in <a href="http://ia341332.us.archive.org/1/items/ipf09_1114_kellen_CD1/IPF09_1114_Kellen.ogg">her talk</a>. Technological rule making directly determines civil liberties online. She argued that technical standards like mp3, mpg, bluetooth, IP, and HTTP are politics by other means and that these standards are increasingly determined by private or hybrid (private/public) institutions, which become points of control over global information architectures. DeNardis provided the example of protests against the ISO Office Open XML standard in India and Norway. A small group of people has control over the entire Internet. Design decisions can have serious consequences for our freedom (think privacy/encryption). Power comes with authority over interoperability. Victims of hurricane Katrina could not register for FEMA help unless they used the Internet Explorer browser. There are significant battles on this level. Technical standards are politics b other means.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><span class="full-image-block ssNonEditable"><img src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/post-images/ipf09.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1261336896078" alt="" /></span><br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Following the trajectory of legal proposals, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/james_grimmelmann">James Grimmelman</a> suggested four ethical scripts for copyright law: 1) Respect copyrights. (Fandom encouraged and channeled.) 2) Don't sue your customers ("Tired of being treated like a criminal for sharing music online?" EFF) 3) Software should be free. 4) I like to share. ("Sharing" valorized as showing respect for the audience.) (<a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/22393902/Ethical-Visions">http://www.scribd.com/doc/22393902/Ethical-Visions</a>)&nbsp; </span><span style="font-size: 110%;">While Free and Open Software is most famous for inspiring others to rethink, often drastically, the direction, purpose, and use of intellectual property law, <a href="http://vimeo.com/7122412">Biella Coleman</a> instead focused on the&nbsp; dual existence of individuality and collectivism among Free Software developers to assess the strength of this domain in political terms. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://vimeo.com/8165014">Grimmelman</a>&rsquo;s four ethical scripts for copyright law related to <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/abigail_kosnik">Abigail De Kosnik&rsquo;s</a> p<a href="http://www.slideshare.net/gaildekosnik/fan-labor-as-paid-labor">resentation </a>about free fan labor. Fans write fiction. They build objects. Fans produce videos, fan mashups, and curatorial music mixes. Hollywood simply cannot keep up with really popular properties. The copyright holders of the source material indirectly profit from fan labor, <a href="http://vimeo.com/7956499">De Kosnik </a>argued. Fans service marketing campaigns. Fans popularize movies and books, or rock bands. Fans promote and market products. Their work engages people; it influences them. De Kosnik suggests that changes to copyright law should &ldquo;force copyright holders to accept fans&rsquo; right to profit from transformative works.&rdquo; (De Kosnik <a href="http://is.gd/5k37o">http://is.gd/5k37o</a>) Today, production and fan creations exist side by side and for viewers, the differences between these two kinds of material are fairly small, De Kosnik argued. <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>A Note on Conferencing</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">Women are often underrepresented at technology-related conferences. Gender equality is a central concern of my event-based practice. With roughly a third of the participants being women, The Internet as Playground and Factory conference included more women than most such events. While I am not especially proud of this ratio, it is the result of intensive focus on women in the field. And while gender equality was constantly on my mind when convening this event, the main goal of the conference was to bring together people who work (more or less directly) on issues specifically related to digital labor.<strong><br /></strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><strong><span class="full-image-block ssNonEditable"><img src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/post-images/portraits.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1261335661848" alt="" /></span></strong>The topic of digital labor offered an invitation to dust off discourses about expropriation of invisible and "unfree" labor (from commercial surrogacy and traditional women's labor to Facebook and sites like <a href="http://23andme.com">23andme.com</a>), control, audience manufacture, internet governance, the wrongness of wealth distribution, data portability, the instrumentalization of fun, the temptations of dominant expropriators, and media literacies for the future.<br /><br /> Conferences matter. If done right, they can turn the focus of a few thousand people to a set of fundamental questions of our time. Conferences have the potential to make professional friendships more durable and to build community.</span></p>

We used Seesmic, <a href="http://twitter.com/idctweets">Twitter,</a> Facebook, <a href="http://trebors.tumblr.com/post/257594846/documents-from-the-internet-as-playground-and-factory">Tumblr</a>, <a href="http://vimeo.com/user2103510/videos">Vimeo</a>, and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/newschool/sets/72157622674520059/">Flickr</a> to expand the conversation and open up windows into the rich online discussion.&nbsp; <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">A developer at an Internet search company politely declined my conference invitation stating that he sensed a slightly anti-capitalist attitude in my introductory text. I was not sure what bugged me more: the "slightly" or the "anti-capitalist." But he was right: this conference proposed a critical approach to Internet Studies. I aimed to frame a broadly comprehensible analysis and critique of the complex nexus of labor and networked sociality and I very much hoped that speakers would offer responses to what we can do in response to the awareness of patterns of expropriation. <br /><br /> I expected that critical perspectives would be stated in a way that is accessible to more than a small, select group of learned media scholars and I think that we reached a good mix. Speakers who came for dense theory found likeminded others while those who searched for example-rich and exoteric talks also got their fix.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><span class="full-image-block ssNonEditable"><img src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/post-images/Picture%206.png?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1261367833107" alt="" /><span class="thumbnail-caption" style="width: 501px;">Eugene Lang students Idil Abshir and Andre Singleton at IPF</span></span><br /><br />On his blog &ldquo;A thaumaturgical compendium&rdquo; Alexander Halavais voiced his concern that "in the discussion that preceded the conference there was ... particular focus on fairly abstract critical theory. "Over the years," Halavais writes, "my enjoyment of super-abstract cultural theory has given way to tolerance. Too often, I worry that the language has obscured the precision of the ideas. Luckily, the pendulum has swung back from the extreme end of this, where verbal gymnastics was valued more than real ideas, and theorist rock stars attracted audiences not because of what they had to say but how they had to say it." Some first year students for whom IPF was also the first conference they had attended, would have been on board with Halavais&rsquo; statement. One or two presentations were not even accessible for the most conference-traveled of cultural theorists. I worry about that. While I understand that it can be pedagogically wise to show students that there is lots to learn and while I also acknowledge that there is value in speaking high theory to a handful of insiders, it does not help if young people get disheartened by our professional allures (e.g., extended deliberations about academic standing, text-heavy slides, incomprehensible lingo). In my opinion, comprehensibility is key especially if we aspire to inspire behavioral change. <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">In her <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/trebor/public-media">presentation</a>, <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/ellen_goodman">Ellen Goodman</a>&rsquo;s thought through the future of public media. She &nbsp;quoted from the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967:&nbsp; &ldquo;foster delivery of public telecommunications services; that constitute a source of alternative services for all, and that serve as valuable local community resources through outreach; that are responsive to local and general interests, expressing diversity and excellence, involving creative risks, and addressing the needs of unserved and underserved audiences, particularly children and minorities. &rdquo; Where are the not-for-profit social networking services that reached any kind of significant membership? The independent citizen media project Crabgrass is one contender in this field but where are the others? Surely, Wikipedia is often quickly cited but this encyclopedia is not a practical model for the entire Internet. Rather, Wikipedia is the exception. Craigslist, however, could be serviceable as a model for online businesses that do not solely aim for profit maximization.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;"><a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/michel_bauwens">Michel Bauwens</a>, founder of the <a href="http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/">P2P Foundation</a> in Bangkok (Thailand), presented a birds-eye vision of peer production that connected with social movements worldwide (e.g. Argentinean workers cooperatives). Bauwens referred to a map that charts the territory of practices that are committed to open access to knowledge, open infrastructures, open formats, and commons-oriented practices. (Bauwens, <a href="http://is.gd/5jPvc">http://is.gd/5jPvc</a>) My question for Michel Bauwens (and Yochai Benkler) relates to their visionary but also utopian characterization of the blossoming landscapes of peer producers whose contributions to the commons are not driven by monetary incentives. People contribute to <a href="http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/">Seti@Home</a>, they gradually reﬁne articles in <a href="http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page">Lostpedia</a> (the encyclopedia for the TV show Lost), they upload how-tos to <a href="http://howcast.com">howcast.com</a> or <a href="http://wikihow.com">wikihow.com</a>. They may help to tag photos from the Library of Congress on the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/commons?GXHC_gx_session_id_=6afecb2055a3c52c">Flickr Commons</a>. The social web facilitates a growing number of sharing but it facilitates this sociality on the proprietary &ldquo;real estate&rdquo; of commercial platforms. The future may be user-led but each click for the benefit of the commons is also potential, profit in the pockets of the intermediaries.&nbsp; <br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 110%;">"We talk about things as if we know what they are," <a href="http://digitallabor.org/speakers1/orit_halpern">Orit Halpern</a> contended in her memorable presentation. Halpern wants us to envision new types of economies and she uses history to denaturalize our assumptions about the present. She wants to make things more curious, interesting and playful. What kind of questions would create new ideas about how to act? One cannot act without a dream of what one wants to put in the world. History forces us to ask: "What world would we like to live in? What forms of economy, technology, and subjectivity do we desire? Can we rethink technology and ourselves in new metaphors, and under different terms? How can we create a future that does not replicate the past?"</span></p>

It is part of a much longer piece. I'm posting it now as it relates to an <a href="https://lists.thing.net/pipermail/idc/2009-June/thread.html">ongoing discussion on the iDC list</a>. </span><br />=</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;">Today, the means of communication are in the hands of Internet users but the environments in which those tools reside are privately owned. Is this really exploitation or does it stop at expropriation? And if there are examples of exploitation: Are they endemic or are they merely the exception? </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;">Exploitation in new social media contexts is not fertilized by sweat and watered by the tears of the seven year-old child that works sixteen-hour days in the factory. The kind of exploitation that Marx described in Kapital still exists today but, in the face of globalization, it is far less visible. Just think </span><span style="font-size: 130%;">about the one hundred thousand &ldquo;gold farmers&rdquo; who worked in China&rsquo;s gaming factories, some four years ago -- far outside urban areas, earning virtual currency by shooting virtual enemies in online games (<a href="http://www.juliandibbell.com/texts/goldfarmers.html">Dibbell 2007</a>). They slept in rural dorms far from home. However, dazzling stories like this are not representative for what happens online. <br /></span></p>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li><span style="font-size: 130%;"><em>Social participation is -- for the very most part -- mutually beneficial for Internet users and the operators of social media services.</em> <br /></span></li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;">What may look like exploitation at first, is -- on reflection-- a situation in which users benefit from each other while corporate hosts capture value from them, the end-users of their product. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: 130%;">There are some moments of exploitation where netizens are utilized in an unjust, cruel, or selfish manner or where they are unfairly used as a resource against their will or without their consent and knowledge (i.e., by way of hidden, deceptive, or contracts written in <em>legalese</em>). Exploitation also entails not offering workers adequate remuneration for their labor.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;">Generalizations about exploitation in the context of social media services sometimes fall short because they don't take the specifics of a given tool or platform into account. </span><span style="font-size: 130%;">Amazon.com is a good example of the complexities of simultaneous pleasure, usefulness, and exploitation at work in one company. (I'd not say that the cadre of people who write book reviews on Amazon.com are exploited.)</span><span style="font-size: 130%;"> </span><span style="font-size: 130%;">To determine if Amazon.com is exploitative we need to discuss it through the lens of specific case studies. </span><br /><span style="font-size: 130%;"><br />I'm thinking about labor and the Internet for a few years now but I can only point to a few instances where exploitation in the most technical sense of the word is apparent. <a href="https://www.mturk.com/mturk/welcome">Mechanical Turk</a> is one of these examples. <br /><br /><strong>Amazon&rsquo;s Mechanical Turk; Instances of Day Labor in the Virtual World</strong><br />Mechanical Turk, also referred to as MTurk, was launched in 2005. As one of Amazon.com's services, it enables computer programs to coordinate the use of online volunteer workers to perform tasks, which computers are unable to do. <br /><br />In their terms of service, Amazon refers to the workers as &ldquo;providers&rdquo; and the employers as &ldquo;requesters.&rdquo; &ldquo;Providers&rdquo; can work from home and remain fairly anonymous. Common tasks that are executed through MTurk include translations, the categorization of information, the editing of marketing content, the writing of reviews for websites or books and the transcription of audio or video files. One MTurk a "provider," interviewed for a <a href="http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2006/07/24/turks/index1.html">Salon.com article</a>, describes his work<br /></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;">"My job is to categorize the shoe based on a list of basic colors: Is it red, blue, pink, purple, white, green, yellow, multicolored? A description next to it reads 'Pink Lemonade Leather.' This is not exactly a brain-busting task; I'm doing it while talking to a friend on the phone. With the mouse, I check a box marked 'pink.' In the next split second, a picture of a navy blue shirt appears. I check 'blue.' Assuming my answers jibe with those of at least two other people being paid to scrutinize the same pictures, <em>I've just earned 4 cents</em>."</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;"><br />MTurk was named after the 18th century chess playing automaton "the Turk," a wooden figure with a turban that seemed to have the ability to think. With a human chess expert hidden inside it, &ldquo;the Turk&rdquo; turned out to be a hoax. Conversely, Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos is proud of the fact that MTurk is a platform that coordinates the human work force of thousands of people.<br /></span><span style="font-size: 130%;"><br />All you need to participate is a computer, a net connection, and an Amazon account. The &ldquo;providers&rdquo; perform activities that computers are not capable of (e.g., image recognition). Workers answer questions like &ldquo;Do the images on this website match with the content?&rdquo; Some employers on MTurk are using people as computers; which fulfills Henry Ford&rsquo;s vision of turning workers into intensely exploitable second grade machines. <em>It's not the machine that is using us; it's the firms that use MTurk that put us in the working position. </em><br /><br />"Turkers" enter into a situation of control: Sitting in their homes, their every mouse click is monitored. While the pay rates for "providers" are lousy, far below minimum wage, &ldquo;requesters&rdquo; get menial tasks done on the cheap. Employers also have the option of rejecting the work, which is one way of not paying the workers at all after the task is completed. The word exploitation really does fit here because the workers are often dramatically underpaid. <em>One worker, for example, was paid $8 for a transcript of 45 minutes of video. </em><br /><br />The language of &ldquo;requesters&rdquo; and &ldquo;providers&rdquo; obfuscates the real labor relationships at play. The original language on the MTurk website was changed from &ldquo;providers&rdquo; to &ldquo;workers&rdquo; but is still maintained in the <a href="https://www.mturk.com/mturk/conditionsofuse">terms of service</a> (accessed April 17, 2009). Employers are still called "requesters" on the website.<br /><br />CEOs felt emboldened by the &ldquo;cost-saving&rdquo; MTurk venture, which has cut their expenses by thousands of dollars. Companies who pay contracted workers through Amazon.com do not have to file taxes and they skirt minimum-wage legislation and health insurance. The mentioned article contends that there is something a little disturbing about a billionaire like Jeff Bezos dreaming up new ways of getting ordinary folks to do work for him for pennies. However, Bezos retorts that MTurk is a marketplace where folks who have work meet up with folks who want to do work. <br /><br />To some degree this sentiment is echoed in Lawrence Lessig&rsquo;s Remix where he suggests that &ldquo;If those within the sharing economy begin to think of themselves as tools of a commercial economy, they will be less willing to play (177). In addition, he says that &ldquo;no one builds hybrids on community sacrifice.&rdquo; (244) <br /><br />Bezos objects to <a href="http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2006/07/24/turks/index1.html">Salon.com</a>&rsquo;s insistence on calling MTurk a &ldquo;virtual sweatshop.&rdquo; Both Lessig and Bezos propose that people would not knowingly enter situations of economic exploitation or sacrifice. Historically, however, that has not been the case; the exploited may well be aware of their exploitation but they may simply have to enter those relationships out of economic desperation. <br /><br />One &ldquo;Provider&rdquo; (worker) describes a task he performed.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;"><br />"I first accepted a job from <a href="http://ContentSpooling.net">ContentSpooling.net</a> that asked me to write three titles for an article about annuities and their use in retirement planning. Then I viewed a series of images apparently captured from a vehicle moving through the gray suburbs of North London, and, at the request of Geospatial Vision, a division of the British technology company Oxford Metrics Group, identified objects like road signs and markings. For all this, my Amazon account was credited the lordly sum of 12 cents."</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;">Concomitantly, the &ldquo;<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&amp;docId=1000291661">Amazon Remembers</a>&rdquo; iPhone application invites users to take a photo of a product (e.g., a chair) and send it to Amazon. Within roughly a day the application provides a link to the user who can now buy this product (or a similar one) on Amazon. The application is not based on image recognition software, as it may seem at first, but on the labor of a workforce that is globally distributed. Once a photo has been submitted, it is made available on MTurk where workers try to match the photo with existing products in Amazon.com&rsquo;s database. If they succeed, Amazon pays them 10 cents. <br /><br />It&rsquo;s hard to believe that anybody would actually perform such &ldquo;human initiated task&rdquo; (HIT) for 10 cents but some workers say that they are simply multitasking. <br /><br />For the most part, Amazon.com is enabling theses labor practices; it is not actually functioning as &ldquo;requester&rdquo; (employer) itself; "Amazon Remembers" iPhone application is an exception. They provide the MTurk platform and employers use it. Beyond that, Amazon does not want to get involved. <em>Through this hands-off approach, Amazon technically facilitates and condones the exploitative practices on MTurk, its code choreographs the interaction. </em><br /><br />More than half of the people who are using this web service live in the United States but close to 32% of MTurk workers reside in <a href="http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/mturk.com ">India</a> where a few dollars may make a bigger dent. Many more people would work for Mechanical Turk if banking access would not be a conditon for participation.<br /><br />"Turkers" in the US</span><span style="font-size: 130%;"> use this "crowdsourcing marketplace" sometimes as a form of entertainment. They appreciate the repetitiveness of the tasks, the meditative absorption. The biggest trick that Mechanical Turk ever pulled off was to make workers believe that what they do is not really work. That, at least, is somewhat suggested by the slogan on MTurk's coffee mugs: <em>"Why work if you can turk?"</em><br /><br />Not everybody who uses this</span> <span style="font-size: 130%;">"marketplace for work</span><span style="font-size: 130%;">" participates in order to make money. In fact, some middle class users in the United States are reported to have used the platform merely as entertainment --an eccentric hobby-- which they enjoy with full awareness of the pitiful compensation. The repetitiveness of tasks and the duration reminds some of them of a video game. "It doesn't add up to a lot of money per hour but if I'm sitting there watching TV anyway, it's more than I'd make just sitting there," one worker wrote. <br /><br />MTurk, for these workers, is not primarily about the money, it&rsquo;s a pastime just like doing crossword puzzles. Indeed, many of the traditional pastimes have, at least partially, migrated online. From playing Chess or Scrabble, to quilting bees, and book clubs, people spend their free time together to enjoy each other&rsquo;s company and be creative. In the case of Mturk, however, creativity and togetherness does not come into it. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;">MTurk is a fairly new environment, a novel and quirky activity in the eyes of many. (Remember the hype around Second Lifea few years ago?) </span><span style="font-size: 130%;">It is not deceptive; there are no hidden agendas but it is exploitative simply because there are many instances in which workers are not paid anywhere near to what they deserve. <em>The fact that &ldquo;requesters&rdquo; can find &ldquo;turkers&rdquo; (as workers call themselves) to work for them does not mean that it pays them fairly. </em>Many workers may simply be forced to take whichever job (i.e., or HIT as it is called) that they can get. Consider that most users have no college education and fall into two age groups: 18-24 or above 65. Working for MTurk may simply be one of a set of desperate and equally bad options. <br /><br />Reports also showed that &ldquo;requesters&rdquo; (employers) found ways of simply not paying their workers by rejecting the work after it was already executed. "The creativity of business in avoiding its responsibility to workers never ceases to astound. It's day labor in the virtual world," a lawyer for the National Employment Law Project points out. No minimum wage, no overtime, no unemployment insurance, no health insurance, and no taxes.<br /><br />In the netherworld of networked labor today's coal miners of sorts may well sit, type, and stare at screens; all day, every day and it ends up hurting them. <em>It hurts them in ways that are slow enough and subtle enough to steal up on them</em> (Sterling, 134). <a href="http://nigelthrift.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/reinventing.pdf">Nigel Thrift</a> summarizes it succinctly:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;">"When a commodity produces a sufficiently compelling experience environment, consumer communities will evolve beyond a company&rsquo;s control, thus directly co-creating value and providing the firm with a new terrain of profit/ generalized outsourcing/ if it is nimble enough to adapt to the new conditions." (Thrift 290)</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;">MTurk offers an odd and engaging experience, which attracts users into a web of exploitation. Who are we becoming by offering ourselves up like that? What does it say about our sense of self-worth when we have to resort to click work to relax? <br />Do we really feel so powerless that it becomes our life project to &ldquo;kill time.&rdquo; Surely, for some people, alos in the US, it's a supplement to their income but I can't help but think what all of this cognitive surplus could do if put to collective use (i.e., just think of the <a href="http://www.theextraordinaries.org/">The Extraordinaries)</a>. <br /><br />Work that is executed through Mturk does not feed back into the commons but it mostly benefits the enterprise. Today the technological tentacles of the enterprise reach deep into our homes where they facilitate the extraction of even the smallest willingness and ability to work. <br /><br /><img src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/post-images/Picture 7.png?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1244719502795" alt="" /><br /><br />A former graduate student a UCLA&rsquo;s Design/Media Arts program created a project that playfully engaged with the exploitative nature of MTurk. He invited &ldquo;turkers&rdquo; to draw a sheep facing to the left" at a rate of 2 cents per sheep. After 40 days 7,599 workers had contributed 12,000 sheep. The artist Aaron Koblin, then sold sets of 20 sheep for $20 at Sheep Market (<a href="http://thesheepmarket.com">http://thesheepmarket.com</a>), which upset some of the workers: "Does anyone remember signing over the rights to the drawings?" In fact they did. In the terms of service, Koblin had indeed specified that workers lose all ownership rights. <br /><br /> Other art projects, using MTurk include the <a class="taggedlink" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/MechanicalOlympics">Mechanical Olympics's Channel</a> and <a href="http://www.bicyclebuiltfortwothousand.com/">Bicycle Built for Two Thousand</a>.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 130%;"><em><br />Not all work that is offered through MTurk is exploitative and most workers may not feel used at all.</em> Remuneration for many "HITs" is, in fact, appropriate. However, <em>some of the cases of waged labor on MTurk are clearly exploitative but within a larger context of the Web they remain fairly isolated examples. <br /><br /></em>Amazon.com set up a scenario that allows for exploitative relationships to take shape, it sees those unfold, and it does not intervene (as if it were a neutral bystander). Some employers who use MTurk abuse their workers who put themselves into this weak position.&nbsp; This does not excuse the exploitation that Amazon.com facilitates (and simultaneously ignores) and that&nbsp; some "requesters" execute. At the same time, MTurk also signifies how desparate many workers must be who indeed use the platform to make ends meet.<br /></span></p>

In the meantime we had a baby and spent three months in <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/treborscholz/sets/72157607290453919/">Northampton</a> where I very much enjoyed research time in the library at pictoresque<a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/smithcollege/pool/"> Smith College</a>. I was tenured in Media Study at SUNY Buffalo and almost simulatenously hired by <a href="http://newschool.edu/lang/">Eugene Lang College</a> (<a href="http://newschool.edu/">The New School University</a>). I just finished the first week of teaching at <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/treborscholz/3218340339/">Lang</a> and it has been a blast. I very much enjoyed the students and I am excited about the courses that I am teaching. Her research interests include virtual world design and use, networked subjectivity, global media emergence and practice in China, India and Africa, contemporary art and technology, and critical history of race and technology. She blogs at <a href="http://projectgoodluck.com/blog/index.php" target="_blank">Project Goodluck</a>.<br /><br /><strong>There Beth Coleman followed up on my talk:</strong><br /><br /></span><blockquote><span class="sizeGreater20">Media professor Trebor Scholz gave a talk at MIT last week on Free Cooperation, discussing the ways in which we participate freely in data mining platforms (such as Google and Face Book) and what if means to give free labor to giant</span><span class="sizeGreater20"> commercial enterprises.</span><br /><br /><span class="sizeGreater20">He showed us network effect graphs that described the ways in which casual use of a site can turn into a de facto commitment to a platform. He also talked about how online labor exploitation is not visible in the manner that historical industrial labor has been. The centralizing effect of the giant media platforms is a phenomenon that causes him real alarm.</span><br /><br /><span class="sizeGreater20">I had a few more questions for him and he nicely agreed to continue the conversation here.</span><br /><br /><span class="sizeGreater20">1. Is this inevitable? Going from a mass-media distribution model to a distributed media of the Web, what has happened to the ability to choose? There are alternatives to Youtube?? Why does this site dominate? Is it design or social (the aggregating of people).</span><br /><br /><span class="sizeGreater20">2. There is no precedent for participatory networks at this scale. So the rules of ownership in regard to what one makes or even of one's personal information are not clear. The eula [end users agreement] for most sites say that the user give up all rights to content. If we are seeing a centralizing movement that reflects in effect our own use habits, how do we reverse this momentum?</span><br /><br /><span class="sizeGreater20">3. This free work is the opposite of what was meant by free software and open source initiatives a decade ago. Do user&rsquo;s rights need to be mandated at the level of law to prevent our herding instincts from helping to create de facto media monopoly? Does this destroy the progressive and innovative aspects of Web agency that someone like Y. Benkler has applauded in Wealth of Networks?</span><br /></blockquote><span class="sizeGreater20"><br /><strong>Trebor Scholz:<br /><br /></strong>Why do people congregate in very large numbers in very few places? People want to be where other people are. I learn from my friends on Facebook (FB) through the newsfeed and from my network on Del.icio.us. Knowledge is created among us, laterally. D. Weinberger calls it the Daily We. I can see what my FB friends (people whom I met at conferences or with whom I am otherwise acquainted) bookmark, read, which events they put on, and which groups they associate themselves with. I'm certainly not alone-- these reasons motivate many of the 70 million people who are on Facebook.<br /><br />Business plans for startups are based on a very low threshold for participation, uploading is made very easy. People contribute videos, blog entries, wall posts, bookmarks, status updates, and photos but none of this material can be exported. An active user becomes more valuable over time, not unlike a bottle of wine in the wine cellar. All those &ldquo;friends&rdquo; with whom we reconnect, sometimes after quite some time, and all those media and texts are literally locked up. Try to delete Flickr photos (you&rsquo;ll have to go one by one; try that with the 2 GB that you just uploaded). Or, try deleting your Facebook (FB) account. You can't. Attempt to export blog entries on MySpace or photos on Facebook. Not accidentally, the export option does not exist. Groups are locked up in these social milieus. Weak-tie-communities are entrapped; it's a corporate confiscation of attention, creativity, and time. Steve Chen, co-founder of Youtube understands how much he owes the &quot;community&quot; when <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCVxQ_3Ejkg" target="_blank">he thanks Youtube users</a> shortly after being acquired by Google for $1.6 billion. Chen: &ldquo;Thanks to everyone of you guys that have been contributing to YouTube, to the community. We would not be anywhere close to where we are without the help of this community.&rdquo; Within three years the site had achieved popularity and that user community directly translated into Google stocks. <br /> <br />Users who &quot;flirt&quot; with a given site are attracted by the wealth of user-submitted content. Bigger is better. It's the network effect: the more people use a technology, the more valuable it becomes. Fax machines don&rsquo;t get you very far if only 5 people use them. Equally, you'll not reconnect with your high school sweetheart on an obscure startup social networking site. You will also not find many photos with an uncommon tag on a photo site other than Flickr. User-submitted content makes these sites so attractive. The top ten site of the Web share 40% of all web traffic (sina.com, baidu.com, yahoo.com, msn.com, google.com, youtube.com, myspace.com, live.com, orkut.com, qq.com). These sites disproportionally control the networked public sphere because of the user-submitted content, which makes their social milieus so intensely engaging. Yochai Benkler refers to this mass-media-like constellation of media monopoly as the &quot;Berlusconi Effect.&quot; The democratizing effects that Benkler described in <a href="http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7929105827" target="_blank">Wealth of Networks</a> in 1995 have little to do with user-generated content. He focuses on the remaining 60% web traffic made up in part of blogs that spread reports showing the shortcoming of Diebold's voting machines.<br /><br />I think that Benkler's sometimes criticized utopian enthusiasm for peer production is justified when it comes to initiatives like Wikipedia or even Google Adsense that allows individuals to supplement their income.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br /><br />&nbsp;Sure, there are endless alternatives to the MyTubes and YouSpaces of the World Wide Computer. But good luck trying to migrate your data and friend lists with you. YouTube is attractive because of those 70,000 uploads a day (and counting). It's very difficult to migrate data to another site. Interoperability is largely an illusion. Users can reconnect with high school friends and those dozens of people would not all move with the potential migrating users. The loss would be significant. My hope is that exportability will become a competitive advantage for Social Web companies. <br /><br />The American site Orkut dominates Brazil and India completely. Canada hearts Facebook. MySpace and FB reign supreme in the United States. How do these sites become the default? Some researchers suggest that it has to do with the colors of the interface or with a celebrity joining the site. (This is not so different to a real estate agency that spreads the news that the R&amp;B singer and songwriter Beyonc&eacute; will buy a duplex in a newly erected building.) But then, soon, once a solid number of users is established, the wealth of social life will be the attraction. Good design cannot have much to with it: just look at MySpace and its disastrous interface. <br /><br />Yochai Benkler correctly suggests that &quot;peer production is as efficient and significant for the 21 century as the assembly line was for the 20th century.&quot; I also agree with Benkler when he suggests that through peer production &quot;people can do more by and for themselves&quot; but I add that the pleasures of online sociality are exploited. Communities are often deceived and commodified. They are unfairly used as a resource, often without their consent and knowledge. It's a bit like Mark Twain's &quot;Whitewashing the Fence&quot; in Tom Sawyer.<br /><br /><span class="full-image-float-left"><img alt="sawyer.jpg" src="http://www.collectivate.net/storage/notes/sawyer.jpg" /></span>Tom tries to motivate the neighborhood boys to paint the fence for him. His friend Ben rejects the offer to paint the fence without pay. Tom responds &ldquo;What do you call work?&rdquo; and resumes his whitewashing:<br /><br />&ldquo;Well, maybe it is, and maybe it ain&rsquo;t. All I know, is, it suits Tom Sawyer.&rdquo;<br />&ldquo;Oh come, now, you don&rsquo;t mean to let on that you like it?&rdquo;<br /><br />The brush continued to move.<br /><br />&ldquo;Like it? Well, I don&rsquo;t see why I oughtn&rsquo;t to like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?&rdquo;<br /><br />That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped nibbling his apple:<br /><br />&ldquo;Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.&rdquo;<br /><br />Online the promise of the free service is subtler than Tom Sawyer's boyish box of manipulating tricks.<br />The surplus attention of people, diverted from television to the Internet, translates into many hours every day spent on social networking sites. (For Myspace that meant an increase in value from $ 583 million in 2005 to $15 billion in 2008.)<br /><br />I disagree with Benkler when he proposes social peace: &quot;The key is managing the marriage of money and nonmoney without making nonmoney feel like a sucker.&quot; How can big businesses like NewsCorp can get away with exploiting communities. From a business perspective, the question is how you a company can find people to make a living with. How can they harvest the labor and presence of those millions on Myspace, for example, without making them feel bad? This is also an underlying question for Don Tapscott in Wikinomics when he celebrates that &quot;In Second Life, the consumer actually co&ndash;innovates and coproduces the products they consume.&quot; (Tapscott and Williams, 2007. Wikinomics, p. 126). <br /><br />Companies like LindenLab, while granting users IP-rights to their creations in the virtual world SecondLife, make profits without providing anything but the technical backbone, the real estate for all this creativity and flying around. The ownership issues of submitted content are handled in favor of the user here. But perhaps that simply shows that the content does not matter so much. Since Howard Rheingold's <a target="_blank" href="http://www.electricminds.org/">Electric Minds</a>, companies have learned have learned that user-submitted content is very rarely what makes money. Today, the platform zars realize that it's about attention; it's about time spent in an environment and about the data that can be sucked out of the user clicks. &nbsp;<br /><br />Benkler, Lessig, Sunstein and others are looking at these issues as lawyers. Their contributions are important but they respond to questions that are relevant to the legal community. I approach the issues from the cultural activist perspective. &nbsp;<br /><br />Is centralization avoidable? Is it a new phenomenon? User-submitted or generated content such as book reviews are not new (very much in opposition to what Web 2.0 ideologues wants you to believe). Benkler argues for the Web as a place where ordinary people can find a voice but it is not a novel trend. Personal email was a sneaky and by all means unplanned use of ARPANET. Amazon.com's review submission feature started in 1995 as an early form of self-publishing. The Indian social networking site Sulekha kicked off in 1999.&nbsp; The participatory turn, the shock of the social, and groundswell of sociality online-- whatever you want to call this quantitative leap of participation in web-based social milieus-- it is new. &nbsp;<br /><br />Is the &quot;Berlusconi Effect&quot; avoidable on the Social Web? The history of radio would be a discouraging precedent. From a plethora of individual radio operators, airwave politics made sure that only the highest-paying stations would survive. Debates about net neutrality immediately enter my mind. A two-tiered Internet would be the kiss goodnight for decentralization. But <a target="_blank" href="http://tinyurl.com/4qvotm">recent news</a> made me hopeful.&nbsp;&nbsp; As it stands now, bloggers like Dailykoz or curated sites like Boingboing still exist and they are A-list sites in terms of traffic.
