Grand Central
December 9, 2006 at 07:41
On Friday I picked somebody up at Grand Central Station and as the train was delayed I had to wait there in the middle of rush hour. At 6pm a fairly wild projection started in Grand Central Station's Main Course. It was visually themed according to the season and transportation imagery. Dozens of people stopped and atched the animated projection that lasted for ten minutes. It occurred to me how rare such situations really are in New York City where the good old public sphere is really wiped out. Public laces are bureaucraticized and taken over by corporate interests. I'm obviously not revealing a secret here. But these 10 minutes that rich and poor, Wall street type and homeless all enjoyed this piece of artsy spectacle reminded me of East Germany where there was much of public art and culture that all could benefit from (I'd not call the Grand Central Animation- art).
