Books on demand-- from your local ATM

atm.jpgUsually I do not re-blog and that's for the same reason that I ask my friends not to forward articles from mailing lists to me because chances are that I am on the list from which they forward. But this  story that I came across on the SmartMobs blog (I know most of you will be on that) is stunning. Forbes describes an ATM-type machine that can print books on demand. To be  precise: 2 books simultaneously within 7 minutes. The machine called Espresso is nearly consumer-ready and will debut in ten to 25 libraries and bookstores in 2007.

On January 1 at the Museum of Modern Art I came across a print on demand machine that offered pod posters of exhibits in the current exhibition. You can see a photo at my Flickr site. The ATM-like machine even offered a choice of frames (I'd like to look inside that box).
