Body Count

kamitzer_orara.jpgYesterday I went to the opening of "Orchard," an artist-run gallery space at 47 Orchard Street in the Lower East Side (NYC) that opened in May. This piece by Luis Camnitzer and Renato Orara, presented on  a long stretched shelf with a set of cards that depicts an image of the coffins of fallen soldiers returning from Iraq, which was initially censored. Each card is marked with a number counting the US/UK soldiers who died in Iraq thus far. The  number to date when the cards were printed was 1986. It is now 2093 according to Iraqbodycount.net, which also makes available the number of civilians and insurgents who died. Democracy Now and the New York Times reported about 2000.
