There goes the neighborhood

thumbsdown.jpgFollowing the Flickr example, now also delicious was sold to Yahoo. As a friend said: "There goes the neighborhood." Now you need a Yahoo account to use flickr and del.icio.us.

I  left a brief comment on the Del.icio.us/Yahoo blog. They lined up the congratulatory crowd first and then come all the shocked voices. So, scroll down.

"The future of del.icio.us is at stake. I care as i use it almost every day. I'm not concerned about the creator's financial life. That should really not be part of the picture when many thousand people use an environment. It's tricky to turn a service over to a commercial giant when thousands trusted this as a free community place.  Now I am supposed to think of del.icio.us as part of the Yahoo "family." The obfuscation of what is a business relationship is cynical. I'm in too deep to pull out but I think this business deal really impacts other "free" and "open" environments. How do you turn the online many into corporate work horses? Here you go. The emerging becomes the corporate dominant. Too bad, Joshua Schechter!"
